CCLA Cuba Trip 2014

January 23rd to February 5th

All-Inclusive 2 weeks

Dear All:

This winter will be the CCLA’s 10th Anniversary. The theme of this year’s trip is Sol. Mar, Música y Poesía. We will be celebrating this auspicious occasion in Holguín, Cuba with our CCLA VP, Manuel and our Holguín CCLA Ambassador, Wency. We will do some day trips to Gibara to visit our CCLA Ambassador, Jorge.

Be part of the Canadian delegation of authors and join us in Cuba for, celebrations, workshops, readings, book launches, day trips, special events and lots of time at the ocean and pool side.

This year we are splitting the 2 week trip into 2 sections. One week at an all-inclusive resort Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca with the second week at Mirador De Mayabe Resort.  We have been working with our CCLA member, Shane Joseph, at Marlin Travel to come up with the lowest possible package price. Shane has kindly reduced some of his rates to accommodate the CCLA. We have two prices for you – one for single occupancy and one for double occupancy.

Single occupancy price per person including all taxes and booking fees for two weeks:

TOTAL for two weeks – $1,831.00

Double occupancy price per person including all taxes and booking fees for two weeks:

TOTAL for two weeks – $1,268.50

DepositThe deposit is only $150.00 per person by Aug 21st and final payment is 45 days prior to departure. Don’t leave it too late. One year one person not only missed the early bird special but missed the flight and the resort because it was fully booked. Prices are lower this year because Cuba is trying to encourage the Cuban destination. It is expected that resorts and flights will be full. Another year someone looked too late and had to leave 3 or 4 days later and missed part of the trip.

This year is an important year for the CCLA. We plan on publishing a CCLA members anthology that revolves around the trip. The province of Holguín has a new media rep - Edwardo

These prices include hotel and airfare from Toronto. All meals are included for the first week at, Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca. Breakfast is included at Mirador De Mayabe Resort. Because we will be away from the Mirador De Mayabe Resort for most of the meals we opted not to use their all-inclusive package. If you choose not to join us for a day trip you can stay at the Mirador De Mayabe Resort and pay for your meals.

The above prices are Early Bird Discounted rates that must be booked before Aug 21st.  The rate will increase for bookings after that date.

Air Flights – Prices include flights from Toronto.

Airport to Hotel – The bus trip from the airport to Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca is included. Normally the trip back to the airport is also included but we will be going to the Mirador De Mayabe Resort not the airport. We might be able to talk the bus driver to drop us off at our second hotel on his way to the airport. If not it might cost $10 or $15 per person. Then there will be another fee to go from Mirador to the airport on the way home. You should budget $30 just in case.

Meals – You should budget for lunch, dinner and snacks for your second week. Each meal will range in price from $2 to $6. Cinco Peso Pizza and a pop for lunch will be under $2. A fancy fish dinner at a fancy restaurant might cost $6. Some meals will be provided by Wency, Manuel and Jorge.  They will not charge for those meals but you should plan on leaving a gift of about $4 per meal.

Bus Day Trips – With our friend Wency’s help we will be booking day trips. It is hard to predict where and when and how many day trips we will do. Each day trip will cost about $10. We might go on 5 to 10 day trips, some longer than others. For instance a trip to Gibara where you will do readings and book launches is about a 45 minute drive including a photo op stop on the way. I would suggest that you might budget $100 for day trips.

Tips – Every year people ask how much we should tip Manuel and Wency for their time spent with us. They will both be taking time off of work to be with us and make our trip a success. Some give them $10 or $20 as a gift and some much more. It just depends on your relationship with them. Sometimes we have pooled our gift and sometimes we have given privately. Other tipping at the resorts is generally about $0.50 to $1 per night for the chamber maid and more or less the same at meals. It all depends on the service you get.

I am sure that I have left something out of this quick message. Zap me a line and let me know what else you would like to know. I will be back in touch with more info about day trips, readings and book launches after squaring things with Wency.

All the best
